Lord Of The Rings

The Fellowship Of The Ring

December 19, 2001

The Fellowship Of The Ring was the first movie in the Lord Of The Rings trilogy.  It's an excellent movie, however it is also very long and complicated, so I'm going to be  brief with this.  Bilbo Baggins hands the Ring down to his nephew, Frodo Baggins.  Soon after Frodo inherits the Ring, Gandalf tells Frodo he must leave the Shire because the Dark Lord Sauron is looking for the Ring.  The Ring is actually Sauron's Ring Of Power, which has the power to dominate the peoples of Middle-Earth.  Gandalf tells Frodo to meet him in the town of Bree.  Frodo sets off on his epic quest, taking his gardener, Sam, with him.  On the way to Bree, Frodo and Sam meet Frodo's cousins, Merry and Pippin.  Shortly after the hobbits meet, Sauron's servants (also called the Nazgul) find them and chase them all the way to Bree.  Once they arrive in Bree, they meet a friend of Gandalf's, who goes by the name of "Strider."  Because Gandalf is nowhere to be seen, Strider leads the hobbits out of Bree, through the wilderness, and finally to the old fortress of Weathertop.  Unfortunately, the Nazgul find them!  Frodo puts on the Ring, thinking it will turn him invisible. Not only does he turn invisible, he also attracts the Nazgul like a lamp attracts bugs.  The Nazgul stab him with a Morgul blade, which poisons him.  Arwen, daughter of Elrond, finds Strider and the Hobbits.  She rides Frodo back to Rivendell so Elrond can heal him.  Once Frodo is in Rivendell, he reunites with Gandalf.  Gandalf tells Frodo that Saruman the White has joined forces with Sauron.  Elrond holds a council with all the races of Middle-Earth, as it is everyone's duty to decide the fate of the Ring.  At the council we are introduced to Legolas the Elf, Gimli the Dwarf (son of Gloin, rember him?), and Boromir of Gondor (Gondor is a kingdom of the race of men).  Legolas then reveals Strider's true identity; he is Aragorn, the heir to the throne of Gondor.  It is decided that the Ring will be destroyed.  It will be cast into Mount Doom, which lies in the heart of Sauron's kingdom.  Nine companions are chosen for this quest; Frodo, Sam, Merry, Pippin, Gimli, Legolas, Boromir, Aragorn, and Gandalf.  And they shall be called the Fellowship of the Ring!  The Fellowship tries to traverse the mountain Caradhras, but their attempt is thwarted by Saruman.  They decide to go through the Mines of Moria.  While in the Mines, they are hunted by orcs, and finally encounter the Balrog.  Gandalf fights the Balrog, but before the Balrog falls into a chasm, it grabs Gandalf and he falls as well.  Once the remaining members of the Fellowship escape the Mines, they go to the forest of Lothlorien, where  Lady Galadriel lives.  Upon the Fellowship's departure from Lothlorien, Galadriel bestows gifts upon them.  They boat down the river Anduin and make plans for the rest of their journey to Mordor.  Meanwhile, Frodo goes for a walk and finds Boromir.  Boromir tries to take the Ring from Frodo so he can use it to aid Gondor.  Frodo puts on the Ring and turns invisible, allowing him to escape from Boromir.  Meanwhile (again.), Saruman creates monsters called Uruk-Hai (they're like orcs, but better!), and sends them to (a) retrieve the Ring, (b) find the hobbit carrying the Ring, and (c) kill the rest of the Fellowship.  The Uruk-Hai find the Fellowship and kill Boromir.  They then hobbit-nap Merry and Pipppin.  Frodo and Sam decide to continue the journey to Mordor on their own.  Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli decide to rescue Merry and Pippin.  That's the end of the first movie in the Lord Of The Rings trilogy.  Take a look at some cool images and watch the Lego trailer below (I couldn't find the real trailer).
