The Hobbit

An Unexpected Journey

December 14, 2012

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is the first installment of the three Hobbit movies. The movies are about Bilbo Baggins's adventure to the Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor (aka the Lonely Mountain). It all begins when Gandalf the Grey appears and invites Bilbo to go an adventure.  Bilbo (being a Hobbit and strongly disliking the thought of leaving the Shire, let alone his house) says "no."  Gandalf leaves a mark on Bilbo's door, and later that evening thirteen dwarves appear on his doorstep.  Their names are Fili, Kili, Dwalin, Balin, Dori, Nori, Ori, Oin, Gloin, Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, and their leader, Thorin Oakenshield.  Their quest is to re-take their lost kingdom from the dragon, Smaug, who destroyed Erebor and the city of Dale.  They take Bilbo along with them because they need a burglar, and Gandalf accompanies them.  So the adventure begins!  Aaaand, the first problem the company encounters are a group of disgusting pony-stealing trolls.  And of course, they send Bilbo to deal with these trolls.  Some group of friends you've got there, Bilbo!  Bilbo, being a lousy burglar, is seen by the trolls, and the dwarves come to save him.  Unfortunately, the dwarves' heroic rescue attempt failed miserably, and they were captured by the trolls.  It's a good thing Gandalf happened to be wandering around, because he saved the dwarves' and Bilbo's butts by turning the trolls to stone!  Three huzzahs for Gandalf!  The company then discovers the trolls' "hole," where they find the swords Orcrist and Glamdring.  Orcrist is given to Thorin and Gandalf takes Glamdring.  Suddenly a wild Radagast appears!  He has news of a Necromancer hiding deep within the bowels of Mirkwood!  Well, it looks like the company is having an incredibly lucky streak today because they're pursued by an angry group of orcs riding wargs.  Why is the company being chased by an angry group of orcs, you ask?  Well, it turns out that when Thorin's grandfather, Thror, tried to take Moria from orcs, Thorin cut the arm off the orcs' leader, Azog, so now Azog wants to hang Thorin's head over his fire-place.  The company manages to escape to the elvish city of Rivendell, where they are forced to eat vegetables! An elf named Elrond gives Thorin information about a secret way to enter the mountain.  The dwarves and Bilbo leave Rivendell, leaving Gandalf behind.  They begin to traverse the Misty Mountains, but they are captured by goblins!  The dwarves are taken to see the Goblin King while Bilbo falls off a cliff and finds a ring.  Gee, where have I seen a ring before?  Bilbo meets Gollum, who forces him to play a riddle game.  If Bilbo wins, Gollum has to show him the way out of the mountain.  If Gollum wins, he eats "Bagginses" whole.  Bilbo wins, but Gollum still tries to eat him, however, he can't kill Bilbo by surprise without his precious ring.  At this moment, Bilbo puts on the Ring, and turns invisible.  This allows him to escape the mountains.  Meanwhile, the dwarves are taken to see the Goblin King, who decides to kill them.  And Gandalf saves the day again!  They should give him an award for Dwarf-Butt-Saving.  The dwarves and Gandalf escape the mountains.  The company is then attacked by Azog and his warriors.  They are forced to climb into the trees, and Gandalf throws flaming pine cones at the orcs.  Gandalf also summons the eagles to save them.  So the dwarves make their dramatic escape!  When the company is safe, Thorin tells Bilbo "I'm sorry I said that you suck."  (He doesn't say that exactly, but you get the idea.)  Then we see Erebor in the distance, and it is indeed awe-inspiring.  The movie ends when we see Smaug's eye looking out from a heap of gold and jewels.  That's it for this Hobbit movie.  You can look at the trailer below, as well as some really cool images.
